Many other branding and business strategy firms claim to know how to determine the "right things to do," but instead demonstrate that they are "do things right" firms. Create a glossy brochure, yes. A high-production-value television spot, sure. But at the end of the day, these creative efforts often fail the client for one simple reason: the right things to communicate are not adequately thought-out before the message is broadcast.
How often have we seen this, the ineffective message glossed over by high-production-value creative? Presented in a conference room outside the context of how the target audience will hear it, see it, experience it. Then, some weeks and months later, the client wonders why the sales needle did not move. And so they resign themselves to trying again with the same or another agency, or not trying at all.
Any branding project is really a positioning project first determine the brand positioning, and the branding will be developed to support the positioning. In other words, first determine the right things to do, before spending a nickel on doing them right.
Since branding is about demonstrating ideas and advertising is about explaining them, we wanted a name that demonstrated rather than explained who we are. And because it had to be about taking ownership of a conversation by first doing the right things, we really had no choice but to name our company Whisper.
